To explain how we will work together and what conditions and rights apply.
How I coach – what you may expect from me
In alignment with CCAR’s foundational principles I support all pathways of recovery – not limited to 12 steps, SMART recovery or any other pathway. If, for instance, you want to see if sports or Buddhism benefit you, I will assist with how to integrate them into your life.
The coaching I offer is not therapy. While we may explore the whys and hows from your past, coaching is not meant to repair trauma. What we can do is create awareness of how trauma affects your current life situation and challenges.
As coaching is not therapy: should I identify topics that are beyond my purview I will acknowledge this and can guide you to getting the right help.
You will communicate with me personally, not with ‘a member of the team’, provided that I am available (my time zone is CET).
What I expect from you
If you want to work with me, I expect you to desire change in some form – even maintaining the status quo may require changes. Communicate honestly and be as open-minded as you can. Recognize that the effort you put in plays a significant role in your achievements. I greatly value your feedback on our work together, whether after a call or between calls.
I will check with you if you have read and agree to this agreement before we start working together.
Frequency and forms of contact
I distinguish between planned calls and crisis outreach.
After we have connected I will suggest a frequency for planned calls, but you will decide what feels best for you. Between planned calls, as long as we have a next call set within a month of the last, I am available for crisis support at no additional cost. Crisis outreach calls will focus solely on the crisis and last between ten and fifteen minutes. Frequent outreach may indicate the need for more frequent planned calls, which I will address if necessary.
A planned call or talk will be 50 minutes. We can always discuss other forms if the situation requires it. For instance: high-frequency, low-effort contact may be temporarily necessary when struggling a lot with staying clean.
I do not conduct planned calls or handle crisis situations through chat – our planned and unplanned calls are voice or video. Our facial expressions and our voice are vital to connect properly.
Rescheduling and payment
If you cannot make it to a planned call, notify me as soon as possible to reschedule. I do not work with cancellation fees, but if frequent rescheduling hinders our progress, I may decide to stop our work until you can commit to planned calls.
Some recoveree’s need to be very particular about how they pay for services. I offer multiple payment methods and ask you to suggest the safest option for you. Payment should be made within a week after the planned call, and may be made in advance. If payment is late I will enquire about your situation and may postpone our planned calls and notify you of it.
End of our work together
When we have no planned calls and our last planned call was over a month ago, I consider our work together as ended.
Code of ethics
As an RCP designated recovery coach, I adhere to and am bound by the CCAR Code of Ethics.
Because your recovery is central, I continuously assess my own fitness to serve you as coach. Should I at any point feel that circumstances of my own might affect the quality or integrity of our work, I would communicate this openly and ensure you continue to receive support — be that through a pause in our work together or referring you to other resources. While this is not a likely scenario, its importance warrants mentioning.
Confidentiality
I am very aware from personal experience of the sensitive nature of what we talk about and take your privacy very seriously. I will not store or share identifiable details about you.
For intervision purposes, I may confidentially share scenarios of what we talk about with peers, anonymously and as a hypothesis.
If I wish to use your feedback in a testimonial, I will ask your written permission and will not use your feedback without it.
Records keeping
To best serve your needs, I keep notes on our sessions, such as insights, questions, and notable events. These notes are stored securely, indexed with a code and not your name. For example if your name is William Masters and you live in the United States your code could be: WIUS1. This data is encrypted and secured with Multi-Factor Authentication.
When our work together ends, all notes are deleted. At any time prior to that, you may request and obtain all records in compliance with GDPR.
If I am legally required to share information, I must do so, but notes still not ever contain specific locations or identifiable interactions.
